How to Use Claude for Outlook
Claude for Outlook is an add-in that helps you triage mail, summarize cited threads, draft replies, work with attachments, and prepare for meetings inside supported Outlook apps.
Outlook add-in vs. Microsoft 365 connector
Claude for Outlook add-in
Runs inside Outlook web, Windows, or Mac. It focuses on the email thread, attachments, drafts, calendar, and meeting context you are working with.
Microsoft 365 connector
Connects Claude to organizational context across Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Availability and write tools depend on tenant and administrator configuration.
If you searched for a “Claude Outlook connector,” check which experience your organization has enabled; setup and permissions differ.
What Claude can do in Outlook
- Triage a crowded inbox and identify messages that need action.
- Summarize long threads with citations back to the underlying email.
- Draft replies that remain unsent for you to review.
- Work with supported email attachments and build a meeting brief.
- Find meeting times and prepare calendar actions for confirmation.
Key safety behavior
Anthropic says the add-in does not automatically send email or invitations. Drafts remain unsent so you can review recipients, tone, claims, and attachments.
How to install Claude for Outlook
- Confirm you use a supported Claude plan and a supported Outlook client.
- Open Outlook's add-in store and search for Claude.
- Add Claude, then sign in and complete any organization approval steps.
- Open an email or calendar context and start with a summary or draft request.
Anthropic currently documents the add-in as beta for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. It supports Outlook on the web, Windows, and Mac; the support guide excludes Outlook iOS/Android, perpetual Outlook 2016/2019, and Exchange on-premises.
Outlook prompts to try
Summarize this thread in five bullets. Separate decisions, open questions, owners, and deadlines, and cite each source email.
Draft a reply that confirms the agreed scope, flags the unresolved timeline, and asks one clear next-step question. Do not send it.
Prepare a meeting brief from this thread and the attached document. Include goals, participants, risks, and three questions to resolve.
Troubleshooting
- Add-in not available: confirm your Outlook client and Claude plan are supported; a Microsoft 365 administrator may need to allow the add-in.
- Personal account cannot connect: the Microsoft 365 connector requires a work Microsoft 365/Entra tenant; personal Outlook accounts are not supported for that connector.
- Write action missing: organization administrators control optional Microsoft 365 write tools. The Outlook add-in still leaves generated mail or invitations unsent.
Frequently asked questions
