Use Claude with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

There are two Google Workspace workflows. The add-on brings Claude into a file already open in Docs, Sheets, or Slides. Google Workspace connectors let you start in Claude and work with supported files from a conversation. Choose based on where your work begins.

Availability and permissions

Claude for Google Workspace is in beta for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Your Google account must be allowed to install Marketplace apps. Google Workspace connectors are available across Claude plans, while live editing of Docs, Sheets, and Slides from Claude is beta. On Team and Enterprise, an owner or primary owner must enable connectors before members authenticate.

Google Workspace administrators can allow or deploy the add-on for a domain or selected groups. Claude's access follows the connected Google account's existing sharing permissions; a link does not grant access to a file the account cannot open.

Use Claude inside an open file

  1. Install Claude from the Google Workspace Marketplace, unless your administrator already installed it.
  2. Open a Doc, Sheet, or Slide with the intended Google account.
  3. Select Extensions → Claude → Open Claude, review Google's permission prompt, and sign in.
  4. Ask for a specific change or analysis. In the default Ask before edits mode, review each approval card before applying it.

The sidebar can use the open file and your selection. In Docs it can revise text; in Sheets it can work with formulas, pivots, charts, and tabs; in Slides it can create slides using the deck's layouts and theme. Review the source file before sharing.

Start from Claude

  1. Open Customize → Connectors in Claude and connect the Google Workspace services you need.
  2. On Team or Enterprise, ask an owner or primary owner to enable connectors first.
  3. Authorize the intended Google account, then ask Claude to create or edit a supported file, or add a Drive file to a conversation.
  4. Open the resulting file in Drive and check its content and sharing settings.

This route fits work that starts with a new file or spans several files. Connector access mirrors the account's permissions. You can review or disconnect services in connector settings.

Troubleshooting

Claude is missing from Extensions

Check that the add-on was installed for the Google account and organizational unit you are using. If Marketplace apps are managed, ask your Workspace administrator to allow or deploy Claude. Reload the file.

The connector is unavailable

Confirm you are signed into the intended Claude organization. On Team or Enterprise, ask an owner to check connector enablement. Reconnect the Google account if authorization has expired.

Claude cannot open a file

Check that the link is a supported Google file and that the connected account can open it directly. Ask the file owner to update Google sharing if needed; Claude cannot bypass source permissions.

Edits need review

Use Ask before edits, name the exact passage, cell range, slide, or output, and verify calculations and formatting in Google before relying on them. Beta labels and behavior can change.
